Vic champs motivate athletes

Yarra Ranges Athletics club athletes competed at the Victorian Open Track & Field Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium over the weekend. Lochie Scully ran a brave 1500m heat, finishing 13th in 4 min 15.51 and Lucas Taylor finished 7th in the Men’s Hammer throw with a throw of 32.19m.

The Athletics Victoria Knockout final for U14-U20 athletes was held in conjunction with the Open Championships. Entry is restricted to the top 8 ranked athletes in each event and age grade. Well done to Lateisha Willis (U18 100m 1st 12.29, 200m 1st 24.61, 100m Hurdles 1st 13.63), Lee Taylor (U16 2000m Walk 1st 12.29.45, Hammer 4th 21.26m), Chelsea Thompson (U16 100m 5th 13.08, 200m 2nd 26.56), Olivia Twining (U20 3000m Steeple 3rd 12 min 29.28), Patrick Keating (U16 100m 4th 12.89, 200m 26.55, Triple Jump 1st 10.40m, Long Jump 2nd 5.04m), Camden Hewitson (U16 2000m Walk 2nd 14 min 35.25) and Tayleb Willis (200m Hurdles 1st 30.36, 100m 1st 13.01, 90m Hurdles 1st 13.60, Triple Jump 3rd 10.96m).

Our little athletes were welcomed back to Morrison Reserve for some athletics competition after a few weeks away for championship events. It was fantastic to see a great turn out of smiling, enthusiastic athletes for an exciting morning of athletics competition. Plenty of personal bests and not too many hurdle related bruises were the reward for everyone’s efforts.

Next week is a Saturday morning programme at Morrisons Reserve. Be there from 8.30 to help with set up and buy your bacon and egg sarnie! In the evening there is a great opportunity to watch some of Australia’s, and the worlds, best athletes compete at the IAAF Challenge meet at Lakeside Stadium. Headlining the meeting is Kenya’s David Rudisha, worth the admission on his own, but there will be plenty more to see. Go to for tickets or more information.

Next Sunday we host day 2 of the Little Athletics Victoria Multi Event championships, where we will see Victoria’s best U12-U14 athletes compete over 5 events. A full day of competitive fun will feature several Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes.
